A woman who decapitated her ex-boyfriend's mom with steak knives and left her head in a kitchen sink has been jailed.

Rachael Hilyard, 38, killed 63-year-old Micki Davis, with the grandmother's body later found beheaded in the garage of Hilyard's Kansas home.

Davis was attacked after going to the house to pick up some of her son's property on April 9, 2017.

The grandmother arrived at the home with her nine-year-old grandson - before violence erupted.

The youngster ran from the scene to call for help before his grandmother suffered a brutal death at the hands of Hilyard.

Ms. Davis's body was found in the garage while her head remained in the kitchen.

Hilyard apologized in court on Tuesday and said she felt "even death would be too good for me now".

She continued; "Every day and every night I am sorry.

"I apologized to the many people that knew and loved Micki Davis, I apologized to her whole family, to her grandson, to all of her friends, to my neighbors, I apologized for who I became."

Davis's family were in court for the hearing and branded Kilyard a "monster"

Micki Davis's son Jeremy Rush said: "Mom taught us one of the worst 4 letter words you can say is hate.

"And I'm not gonna lie, I hate this monster and I think my mom would be okay with that."

The family said they will "never get over" the anger, reports the Mail.

Despite the court hearing about Hilyard's mental health issues, a judge on Tuesday said they did not relieve her of the "horrific" crime.

Rachael Hilyard was jailed for life after the horrific killing.

Judge Bruce Brown said: "Mental health issues do not equate to crime. Having a head injury does not equal crime.

"Your life isn't over and my charge to you at this point would be that you turn your life to a life of good.

"This case and the actions taken — I lack words for."

Hilyard's lawyer, Quentin Pittman, had previously acknowledged she did kill Davis but claimed it was not premeditated.

The defence also claimed Davis fell during a struggle over a painting before decapitating her to release her soul from her body.

However, Davis's terrified grandson said he witnessed Hilyard jumping on and beating Davis with no warning.

The court also heard how in the days leading to the murder she made social media searches referencing murders and beheadings.

A jury convicted Hilyard of first-degree murder in February and she will be eligible for parole after serving 50 years in prison.
